St Catherine's Hill

Walk Location:

Once an iron age fort, we found St Catherine's Hill a great place to take refuge from the fierce traffic on the M3!

Just outside Winchester, and easy to reach from the motorway, this is a fabulous hill with stunning views all around. Assuming that you can manage the odd steep ascent - and there may be gentler paths which we didn't find - this is a wonderful dog-walking area.

If you're heading north-east, leave the motorway at junction 10, where the hill is on your left, and just keep turning left following signs to St Cross, St Catherine's Park and Ride, and St Catherine's Hill.

If you're heading south, I don't think you can exit at J10, so you need to leave at J9, which isn't very far away, and follow signs for Winchester and the A272 along Spitfire Link, a road which goes parallel to the motorway. Keep straight ahead, following the signs to Winchester and the Park and Ride, and after a roundabout or two you'll go under the motorway, and see signs to St Cross and to St Catherine's Hill.

There's a car park, and a short tunnel takes you to the path up the hill.
